How to apply Quantity X automatic discounts to Shopify draft orders

Applying automatic discounts to Shopify draft orders

Written by Andrey Gadashevich

Quantity X discounts can be applied to draft orders, but Shopify won't add them on its own: you turn them on per draft with one checkbox, Apply all eligible automatic discounts.

Overview

Quantity X runs as a Shopify automatic app discount. Shopify applies automatic discounts at the storefront checkout without any action, but for orders you create manually in Orders → Drafts, it only calculates them when you ask it to. Once you do, Shopify evaluates your active Quantity X offers against the products and quantities in the draft and shows the discount in the Payment section.

Before you start

Check these three things first, or the checkbox will add nothing:

  • The offer is active in Quantity X and covers the products you'll add to the draft. In the Quantity X dashboard, the offer shows status Active and its toggle is on.

  • The Quantity X discounts are active in Shopify. In Discounts, the entry named Quantity X Storage 1 should show status Active (stores with many offers may also have Storage 2, 3…). Don't edit or delete them: the app manages them, and all your offers run through them.

  • The offer's sales channel includes Online Store. Draft orders created in the Shopify admin are treated as online orders, so an offer limited to POS only won't apply.

Add the Quantity X discount to a draft order

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Orders → Drafts.

  2. Open an existing draft, or click Create draft order.

  3. Add the products and set quantities that meet your offer's tier (for example, 3+ units for a "Buy 3, save 10%" tier).

  4. Add the customer, if the order is for a specific customer. Customer tags and B2B status can affect which offers apply (see Limitations).

  5. In the Payment section, click Add discount.

  6. Check Apply all eligible automatic discounts. The Quantity X discount appears under it as Quantity discount · Product and order discount. Click Done.

  7. Check the result: the discounted price appears on each eligible line item, and the Total updates.

  8. Click Save, then send the invoice or collect payment as usual.

Changed the items afterwards? If you add products or change quantities after applying the discount, check the Payment section again before sending the invoice to confirm the amount updated.

To remove the discount: open the draft, click Edit discounts in the Payment section, uncheck Apply all eligible automatic discounts, click Done, then Save.

Limitations

  • The checkbox is per draft. Shopify doesn't apply automatic discounts to drafts by default, so you check it on every new draft.

  • POS-only offers don't apply. Drafts created in the admin count as online orders; offers limited to POS are skipped.

  • Customer conditions still apply. If an offer excludes certain customer tags, or is turned off for B2B customers, a draft for that customer won't get it.

  • One product discount per line. Shopify applies only one product-level discount to each line item. If you also have a native Shopify automatic discount on the same products, it can apply instead of Quantity X.

  • Combining with other discounts follows the combination settings of your Quantity X discounts in Shopify. A manual discount you add to the draft may stack with or replace the Quantity X discount depending on those settings.

  • Discount codes at checkout are off by default for draft order invoices. If you allow them, check that the customer can't stack a code on top of the volume discount unintentionally.

Troubleshooting

What you see

What to check

No discount after checking the box

The quantity in the draft meets the offer's lowest tier; the offer is active and includes these products.

Discount works on the storefront but not in the draft

The offer's sales channel isn't set to POS only; the customer isn't excluded by tag or B2B setting.

A different discount appears instead

A native Shopify automatic discount covers the same products and takes the line. Pause it or narrow its products.

Amount didn't update after editing items

Open Edit discounts, uncheck and re-check Apply all eligible automatic discounts, then Save.

Still not applying? Contact Quantity X support with the draft order number (for example, #D12) and the offer name, and we'll check it for you.
